Use our recommendations to help you find the right type of car seat for your child, install it, and keep your child safe during your travels.

Types of Safety Car Seats

Rear-facing: Use from Birth to 3 years of age. Check the NHTSA guidelines for more information. Note that if you buy an infant-only style seat, it must be used in a rear-facing capacity.

Forward-facing: Use from 1 to 7 years of age. Check the NHTSA guidelines for the differences between the 1 to 3 years old and the 4 to 7 years old category.
Booster: Use from 4 years to 12 years, depending on your child’s weight and height. At 8-years-old, if your child fits the guidelines, you may opt for the use of a seatbelt.

Seatbelt: Use from 8 years to 12 years. Always seat your child in the backseat, wearing a seatbelt, through the age of 12 years old once they’re of proper weight to do without a child seat or booster, and before allowing them to ride in the front seat wearing a seatbelt.

Safety Seat Installation Tips
  1. Be sure to read the child seat manual and the safety seat section of your vehicle owner’s manual.
  2. Install child seats with either a lower anchor or a seat belt for security.
  3. The Fresno, CA police or fire station is likely to offer free inspections, which you might take advantage of to ensure you’ve accurately installed your child safety seat.
